What we do, who we are and how you can help!
The Friends of Barnsbury Square Gardens are a team of volunteers made up of local residents. We work alongside the Environment and Regeneration teams in Islington Council to improve and maintain the green environment of the square, and to create a community hub where people of all ages feel welcome. New hands on deck are always good news! We always need help with work on the green environment, running events, and on our committee team. FOBSG volunteers are often around during the day, and regularly on Saturday mornings from 10am if you want to come and check it all out.
The Friends of Barnsbury Square Gardens volunteers also apply for grants, funding, and permits to hold events etc. We’ve successfully applied for grants to renovate the hut kitchen, for planting, soil, and fencing. Our volunteers host and run school visits, seasonal parties for the local community, artist-in-residence visits, corporate volunteer sessions, and we get Barnsbury Square Gardens included in London-wide events and listings. Saturday s at 10am all year round we hold morning gardening sessions which you’re welcome to join us for (no skills needed. tools and gloves provided). We also run and maintain a free book swap – the bookcase is on the hut wall. You can read about some of us in the April 2026 edition of Country Life Magazine!
